St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church is one of the oldest parishes in Los Angeles. Founded in 1903, it has always welcomed immigrant populations, beginning with those from Ireland and Germany in the early part of the 20th Century, African-Americans in the 20’s and 30’s, Mexicans in the 50’s and now Central Americans since the 80’s. Their new sanctuary was dedicated in 2007.

The annual Irish Fair hearkens back to their roots 100+ years ago in spirit, if not in details, and was a fun event for adults and children of all ages.

It was a friendly atmosphere and everyone was having a nice time.  There were parents with kids, teens on dates, and seniors watching over it all.  It was also very contained, all on the fenced in church campus.   The rides were either for little kids or the adventurous, nothing really in between.

Free admission and live entertainment reigned all weekend, with many rides for the little ones as well as the adventurous. Food and ride tickets were available at ticket booths around the fair. There were also a Bingo game, a Wheel-of-Fortune and other carnival games.

The entertainment I saw was provided by dancers and singers, all having fun and being appreciated by the relaxed crowd. Food options included tacos and pupusas among other offerings. The tacos were excellent!

My own home church had a carnival last year and this one held up well in comparison with more excitement from rides and a very homey and friendly feel. There was even a wedding.

I look forward to attending more events at St. Patrick’s and other churches in the area.
