A food desert? The USDA says no

May 2, 2011, 2:09 p.m.

The USDA released a new map today that lists food deserts across the United States.

The map details food deserts by census tracts. According to the USDA, tracts that are food deserts were defined as the following: "A food desert is a low-income census tract where either a substantial number or share of residents has low access to a supermarket or large grocery store."

Several areas across South Los Angeles are listed as food deserts, like areas near Compton and Lynwood.

However, Vernon Central is not listed. In the past year, Vernon Central has become the focus for food issues, with a ban on fast food restaurants and new grocery store openings like Fresh & Easy and others.
