Student shot near Jefferson High School

May 9, 2011, 1:39 p.m.

Police are looking for the gunman who shot and injured a male Jefferson High School student near the school Monday morning.

The incident occurred at about 7:25 a.m. on 41st and Compton Avenue, only a few blocks away from Jefferson High School. An 18 year-old male was shot twice nearby Snyder Park, said Los Angeles Police Department officer Lyle Knight. The victim is expected to survive.

Michael Taft, Jefferson High School principal, confirmed the victim to be a student at Jefferson, but said the school had no further details because the shooting occurred off-campus.

The suspect, said Officer Knight, was on foot when the shots were fired, and was then seen getting into a car going south on Compton Avenue. Nearby Ascott Avenue Elementary was placed on lock down by school police for about thirty minutes while police searched around the neighborhood for possible suspects.

Authorities are still investigating whether or not the shooting was gang-related, Knight said.
