For one weekend, 19 museums across the L.A. area will open their doors and offer free admission to anyone who wants to visit. Included in this list is South L.A.'s own California African American Museum (CAAM) and the California Science Center; and nearby, Downtown's Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

These locations along with 16 others will be letting visitors in for free on January 26 and 27. This goes for regular admission but special exhibits, such as the Endeavour space shuttle at the Science Center, require you to reserve a timed ticket.

There are multiple exhibits currently on display at CAAM, but one of the highlights is the "Sampling the Microscopic Artwork of Willard Wigan" -- a display that includes sculptures so small they can fit in the eye of a needle and can only be seen through a microscope.

Although the California Science Center has been getting a lot of attention for the Endeavour, their permanent exhibits are interactive and educational. You learn about ecosystems, the solar system and the life cycles of humans and animals. An added bonus is theIMAX theater right across the way from the museum. Tickets to showings aren't free but may we worth it to see "To the Arctic 3D," "Blue Planet" or "Hubble 3D" -- narrated by the one-and-only Leonardo DiCaprio.

Downtown's MOCA is currently showing an exhibit at its Grand Avenue location that highlights L.A.-based artists working in their natural habitats. The exhibit consists of 23 photographs from Jason Schmidt, who has been taking pictures of artists in an array of disciplines since 1997. His total series includes 500 photos.
